Decluttering Your Home Can Enhance Your Emotional Well-Being

There are so many reasons why decluttering your home is so important. For example, an overabundance of possessions can collectively create chaotic and disorderly living spaces. Decluttering not only makes it easier to find what you are looking for, or discover lost items you have forgotten about, it can also improve your mood and state of mind. Decluttering your living space gives you back control over things and your home environment. Moreover, the process of decluttering can give you a sense of freedom and accomplishment.

In a paper published in the Journal of Environmental Psychology in 2016, Catherine Roster said , when there’s lots of clutter, you lose control over your physical environment, which is very defeating and can bring on stress, depression, or anxiety.


Clutter can also be a safety hazard if there are piles of items lying around, collecting dust and attract bugs, or wires on the floor that someone can trip over. 

Some evidence suggests, that living in a cluttered space could even affect your weight. A study published in January 2016 in the Journal Environment and Behavior found that spending time in a chaotic, untidy  kitchen can contribute to an out-of-control mindset, and people often choose to eat higher-calorie snacks than people in a neater kitchen.
